Making Money Through Blogging - Improving Search Engine Rankings

The biggest step you can take towards increasing traffic to your website is considering how search engines "see" your blog. You may have tons of great content that users will gobble up, but if your readers can not find it there is no point! My years of experience have taught me that search engines do not really care about the quality and quantity of your website content. This is a sad truth, but an important one to grasp. Search engines really only consider how important your site appears to be. This is measured by the quality and quantity of your website's backlinks.

A backlink is a hyperlink from some other website that points to your blog or online store. The more importantly search engines view that site, the more credibility you will build with sites like Google and Yahoo. Think about it, the biggest websites on the internet have millions of backlinks from personal and business websites. It is impossible to browse the internet for more than five or ten seconds without stumbling across a hyperlink to Facebook. This is why social media websites rank so high on search engines.

How can you tell whether a website is "popular" with search engines? One easy way to get an idea is by checking on a website's Google Page Rank, or PR. Most browsers have applications that will add a PR tool to your browsing window. This will make it easy to see if a site is relatively unknown (PR=0) or amazingly popular (PR=10). There are only a few page rank 10 websites on the internet, but if you really want to start getting serious traffic to your website you will need to get your page ranked as at least a 1.

How can you do that? The answer lies in building backlinks. This process can be tedious, but it will pay off in the long-run. There are several ways to build backlinks. Posting on forums with links in your profile is the easiest way, but article writing, online press releases, and blog commenting are also very popular methods of backlinking. You might also want to contact webmasters of related sites to ask for a link exchange. This is a powerful tool as well. The more links you have, the more likely your page will get ranked by Google.

The sooner you get started building quality backlinks the faster your website will see high volumes of traffic. After all, the more visitors your site has, the more money you can generate through ads, sales, and affiliate programs.
